The Cogsdill Roll-a-Finish tool is an advanced internal and external roller burnishing instrument designed to deliver precise sizing, superior surface finishes, and work-hardened surfaces in seconds. Utilizing hardened, highly polished steel rollers brought into pressure contact with a softer piece part, the tool plastically deforms the material surface through the cold flowing of sub-surface metal. This metal-displacement process eliminates microscopic peaks by flowing material into valleys, generating a mirror-like, plateau-like profile without cutting or abrading the surface.
- Simultaneous Three-Way Quality Enhancement: Delivers accurate sizing, improved surface finish, and a hardened surface in a single pass.
- Superior Surface Integrity: Generates a dense, uniform, friction-free, and wear-resistant surface without sharp projections or feathered edges.
- Fast Processing Times: Completes operations in seconds compared to traditional minutes-long abrasive methods like grinding, reaming, honing, or lapping.
- Work-Hardening Effect: Increases surface hardness by 5% to 10% with a penetration depth of .010” to .030” (.2540 to .7620mm), improving fatigue resistance and wear life.
- Built-in Precision Size Control: Features simple manual adjustments with diameter adjustment increments of 2.5 or 5 microns (0.0025mm / 0.0001 inch, or 0.005mm / 0.0002 inch for tools over 50mm) to maintain precise dimensions across long production runs.
- Versatile Operation: Compatible with standard spindle-driven machines, single or multi-purpose equipment, hand or machine feed, and automatic or automated setups.
- Tool Series: SRM, SRMR, SRMB (Internal) and XBB (External) Roll-a-Finish series.
- Diameter Capacities: Available in metric and inch ranges spanning from micro-tolerances up to large bore/shaft capacities (including external sizes from 1.5mm to 65mm and internal configurations up to 177mm / 6.969").
- Surface Finish Capability: Surface finishes of .25 micrometers (10 microinches) $R_a$ and below are obtainable on uniform, tear-free prepared surfaces.
- Coolant Recommendations: Standard grade, light-weight, low-viscosity lubricating oil, or mineral, sulphur, or soluble oils compatible with the burnished alloy. Highly refined oil-based coolants with low viscosity are recommended for aluminum or magnesium; mineral seal oil is ideal for cast iron. Coolant filtration is strongly recommended.
